Babies cry, even at Christmas

Image
Are you worried how to cope with a crying baby?

Christmas can be stressful. If you’re looking after a young baby remember to pause at the door and check the three C’s -
Calm - Are you calm?
Careful - Can you be careful?
Caring - Will you be caring?

Being a new parent is challenging, but there is support out there. Your health visitor is a great source of information. Dads, and dads-to-be, that means you too.
Don't be afraid to ask questions and find out more

Top tips for safer infant sleeping this Christmas:

  • At every sleep, place your baby on their back in a clear cot or sleep space.
  • If you are travelling or sleeping somewhere different over the festive period, plan ahead to ensure you can make a safe sleep space for your baby.
  • If you usually co-sleep and are planning to have alcohol to drink, plan ahead to make a separate sleep space for your baby.

Key reminders for safer infant sleeping throughout the year:

  • The safest place for your baby to sleep is in a moses basket or cot in the same room as you for the first 6 months.
  • Don’t sleep on a sofa or armchair with your baby – this increases the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or accidental suffocation by up to 50 times.
  • Your baby should not share a sleep space with anyone who has:
    • had alcohol to drink,
    • who is extremely tired,
    • who is a smoker,
    • who has had drugs which can cause drowsiness (including cannabis),
    • or with anyone at all, if they were born premature or low birthweight.
  • Talk to your midwife or health visitor if you have any concerns.
